Foldgate Inn – Stradsett

Stradsett revels in its special place in the heart of Norfolk. The very name means ‘settlement by the road’ and the estate has an undeniably ancient pedigree and welcoming geography, nestled at the meeting of several Roman highways – which were so well-travelled that Hadrian-headed coins still unearth themselves nearly two millennia later.

First recorded licensee was Elizabeth Springfield in the in the 1794 Clackclose Licence Registers

Dating from the 18th century, the Foldgate Inn was part of the Stradsett Estate, the family seat of the Bagge family. In view of this, it is unsurprising that the pubs first lease was granted to Bagges Brewery of King’s Lynn. After Bagges Brewery was taken over by Steward & Patteson the lease was kept-up by the brewery’s new owner.

Later, Truman’s London Brewery and then Watney’s also took leases and supplied victuals to the pub.
